I have no doubt whatsoever that you are smiling right
now because of this title. I knew when I chose it as a title that it is funny.
And I also know that it is a familiar phrase that we can all relate to,
especially if you are from my part of the world. In fact, that is why I chose
it.
Without any prejudice against any person or group of persons,
I have no doubt that you know the set of people that are associated with this
phrase, I refer to them as “The men in
black,” you can fill in the gap.
Whenever any member of this group accosts and asks you “Wetin
you carry?” it is usually with a mind of finding an exhibit with you; something
with which they can accuse and for which they can arrest you.
For the purpose of my intent for writing this piece, I see
myself in the light of these men (i.e the men in black). However, there are
things that differentiate me from them. While I am asking you “Wetin you
carry?” I am not doing so in order to find an ‘exhibit’ with you - something
with which to accuse and arrest you.
I am asking YOU this question, “WETIN YOU CARRY?” from a
positive point of view. I am doing so because I know that you indeed carry
SOMETHING, not something illegal, but legal. I don’t know what it is that you carry, how big or small, but
for a surety, I am certain that you carry SOMETHING!
It is beyond me to discover for you what you carry, but I
intend to help YOU discover “Wetin You Carry.”
Before you read any further, please take a moment to ask
yourself, “WETIN I CARRY?”
You might be asking what the need for that is. The purpose is
so that you can think, which is something not many people are used to doing. In
fact many dread the thought of thinking; it seems like too much work to do. No
wonder Henry Ford said, “Thinking is hard
work and that’s why many avoid it.” But the good book tells us, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”
Bishop David Oyedepo further stressed that, “If you don’t think you will stink.” And
my humble position is that the day you stop thinking is the day you start
sinking.
Further on the issue of asking questions, Anthony Robbins
said, “The quality of your life is
directly proportional to the quality of questions you ask yourself and others
around you.” He also said, “When you
ask the right question, you will find the right answer.”
Questions are good for your health and life.
“He who asks a question
is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask a question is a fool
forever.” – Chinese
Proverb
I said ask yourself, “WETIN I CARRY?”
As we continue, let us consider a few examples from the word
of God. ‘“… Your servant my husband is
dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is
coming to take my two sons to be his slaves. So Elisha said to her, “What
shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said,
“Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil…”’ – II
Kings 4:1-7
You may also think like this woman that you have nothing
except ‘a jar of oil.’ I want you to
know that that jar of oil, whatever it is, is SOMETHING. Rev. Sam Adeyemi said,
“The thing you need to turn your life
around is around you.” YOU CARRY SOMETHING!
The story of the Israelites in the Bible, especially their
deliverance from captivity in Egypt, is still a classic. One man who was at the
centre of it all was Moses. I don’t have to go through the details. We all know
that God used him to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt. One thing that
Moses had and which God used to wrought most of the miracles that eventually
led to their deliverance was a ‘Shepherd’s rod.’ ‘“So the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hands? And he said, “A
rod.”’ – Exodus 4:2.
I don’t know what your own rod is, but I am convinced beyond
every shadow of doubt that you have your own rod. WETIN YOU CARRY?
“A man’s gift makes
room for him, and brings him before great men.” – Pro. 18:16
“Gift?” you may ask. Yes GIFT – your TALENT! That God-given
ability to sing; to dance; to write; to run; to play football; to cook; to
organize; to be creative or whatever it is you are gifted to do. That is what I
am talking about.
Matt. 25: 14-30 (summarily) says, God has given you at least
one talent. You are to discover it, develop it and the deploy it. i.e. give it
commercial value and profit from it. After all Jesus said in Luke 12:33, “Sell what you have…” Deut. 8:18 also
(summarily) says, God does not give wealth, He only gives the power to get
wealth. That power is at your disposal.
Check out I Tim. 4:14a, “Do
not neglect that gift that is in you…” II Tim. 1:6, “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you…”
Notice that the gift is in YOU!
“When we fail to use
our potentialities we get farther and further away from God’s realities.” – Ubong Essien
God gave you ability so that you will not be a liability. He
did not create you for a life of mediocrity or obscurity, but to be a celebrity
and that’s why He gave you the ability to counter the effects of the reality of
the calamity that subsist in your society.
Look around you; look to your hands; look within you. YOU
CARRY SOMETHING!
There are people in this world with certain problems and you
are the one with the solution to their problems, in fact not only do you have
the capacity to solve their problems, you are the very solution they have been
waiting for. If you don’t manifest, they will die with their problems. You are
blessed to be a blessing. Note also that the money you earn is c proportional
to the problems you solve.
“The world is not
waiting for your explanation; they are waiting for your manifestation.” The Bible puts it like this, “For the earnest expectation of the whole
creation eagerly waits for the revealing (manifestation) of the sons of God.”
– Romans 8:19
Finally, I want to implore you not to go and enrich the grave
any further than it is, don’t go to the grave with your gift. The grave does
not need it, the world does. Enrich your nation and generation with you gift.
Imagine if Bill Gates and his friend, Paul Allen never stepped out with their
gifts – the love for software development. What would the world be like today
without computers? Think about it.
The ability to write is one of the things I carry and that is
why you are reading this piece.
WETIN YOU CARRY?
